Learn the basics of a fascinating screen printing technique that uses thickened dyes to print onto base fabripossiblities for their fabric. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of screen printing on fabric using simple screens and their own designs. Colour theory, overprinting andc. Colour changes, organic shapes and prints will result and excite the quilter into unlimited finishing processes will be covered. No experience necessary but must be willing to have fun.

Clamp Dyeing

Pattern and colour mix beautifully when planned as a resist technique for fabric dyeing. Students will learn colour sequencing, methods of tying, wrapping and folding, dye baths and design while creating fabrics for their own special projects. Additional time may be added for quilt design using the created fabrics.

Students will be able to dye several yards of fabric and produce their own unique blends of tones, tints and shades!

Screen, plate and mono printing

Creating print on fabric with a variety of techniques will be the focus while students are introduced to the special qualities of thickened dyes. Students will use screen for printing with a variety of stencils and masks including wax, paper and mylar. Students will then make and use their own gelatin plates and take time for other methods of mono printing. Colour theory and colour mixing will be an important part of the workshop and students will acquire an excellent foundation of experience to continue further exploration on their own.

Resists, Rubbings and Repetition with Soy Wax

Learn how to create exciting designs with thickened dyes and soy wax. Students will experiment with painted batik, soy wax crayons and screen printing while learning design principles, mark making and colour theory. Soy wax is biodegradable and easy to remove with washing! Students will make a variety of samples which can be used for further exploration in quilting and stitch.

From fragments of ancient linens to current application methods on fabrics, artists have applied text to their work for centuries. Students will learning some of the history of alphabets and lettering and the significance that print plays in our lives. After exploring a variety of fonts and styles students will sketch out their ideas and consider possible application methods in stitch, appliqué, or surface design techniques. Students will be introduced to stamping, screen printing, image transfer, resist techniques, paint sticks and more. Students will spend time discussing design principles, personal statements and make samples useful for further work.

Dragon Bones and Fish Fingers

Learn important design fundamentals in this class while mastering Susan’s Dragon Bones technique. Play with squares, rectangles, triangles or diamonds and use insertion strips of colour to run across the fabric surface. Design elements of line, shape, value and colour will be studied and practiced and students will have the opportunity to test and use several additional piecing techniques. Time will also be spent trying out border, quilting and embellishment choices. This class will be an excellent addition to your quilting skills.

In a two day class students will spend time designing their own shapes, testing the technique and designing their border treatments.
