Resists Rubbings and Repetition

Learn how to create exciting designs with thickened dyes and soy wax. Students will experiment with painted resists and screen printing while learning design principles, mark making and colour theory. Soy wax is biodegradable and easy to remove with washing! Students will make a variety of samples which can be used for further exploration in quilting, mixed media and stitch. 2-4 days

Exploring Resists

Explore further and deeper into the many possibilities that soy wax resists provide. Students will work on multilayer applications of colour and wax and will use a variety of dyes, paints and colour products including discharge. They will employ stitch, clamping, pole wrapping and other techniques to produce pattern and texture on their chosen fabrics. 2-5 days

Layering the Surface

Exciting design often involves many layers of colour and imagery, building upon one another. In Layering the Surface students will create base layers of colour using simple dyes, learning colour mixing and theory, use of value and application techniques. More layers of colour and imagery are added with Shiva Paintsticks using freeform applications, stencils and textures. For a second day, students will develop further designs on their fabrics with a choice of applique, piecing and stitch.

Colour To Stitch

This is an exciting class developed for quilters, stitchers, mixed media artists and everyone in between. Students begin with basic colour mixing theory using Procion MX dyes. They prepare and dye a range of fabrics and threads using a planned palette showing value, tints and shades. Students will learn how these fibres can be used in their work and there will be a focus on safe studio habits.

For a second day students will create and begin a plan for their beautifully dyed threads and fabric while exploring important design elements.

Learn the basics of fascinating screen printing techniques that use thickened dyes to print onto base fabrics. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of screen printing on fabric using simple screens and their own designs. We will discuss colour theory, overprinting, design options and finishing processes. Colour changes, organic shapes and prints will result and excite the quilter into unlimited possibilities. No experience necessary but must be willing to have fun.

Pattern and colour mix beautifully when planned as a resist technique for fabric dyeing. Students will learn colour sequencing, methods of tying, wrapping and folding, dye baths and design while creating fabrics for their own special projects. Additional time may be added for quilt design using the created fabrics.
