Boat - bus - train - plane - plane - train - bus - hotel - plane - taxi - hotel.....are you exhausted yet? And that's just to Thessaloniki where I spent a few days of research! Tomorrow is the day that will stretch on for about 48 hours as I begin the journey to my art residency in Greece. I'm so excited - are you?
Thank you for signing up for my blog - I appreciate the support and look forward to the journey together!
I began assembling piles a couple weeks ago - this has been such a lesson for me as I pack. My first residency to Iceland, about five years ago was a a fabulous time but I took an extremely large and ridiculous amount of supplies that I never used and had to haul around airports, buses and cars. Never again!
My second residency was the critical lesson in minimalism - everything fit into half a medium suitcase - in a plastic container - this meant that if I didn't have it, I couldn't use it and had to be creative in other ways. Those ways turned into my focus for this residency - Vessels - Art of the Feminine, which will be a long term focus over the next couple years.
So what have I packed?
- basic sewing tools - I bought inexpensive scissors and leaving my Ginghers at home
- several skeins of hand dyed threads and a selection of needles
- I use school pencil cases to pack similar items together

Basic sewing tools

Pins and Needles - plus a list of contents

Hand Dyed Threads and a selection of Needles

a selection of fabric with texture and pattern
Some laces and trims - also hand dyed

a stack of hand dyed fabric - only taking half the pile!
I enjoy journaling and writing Morning Pages so I have packed a couple sketchbooks - ones I can add watercolour and collage. Plus a journal with lined pages.
I have also packed a small sketching kit with brushes (two, one is has a water resevoir) a nice little book, Pigma pen and all put together in a zippered case. I love these cases (packing cubes) as I can grab one and throw it in my backpack for the day!
I bought a package of WireForm which is supposed to hold its shape - I've never used it and its quite expensive - so will give it a try and get more when I'm home again.
One of the challenges of this art focus, is that I will be creating dimensional vessels - meaning they might take up more room coming home than I expect....my plan might be to collapse them down for packing or build them in segments/pieces that can be reassembled at home - not sure how that will work!
I've also packed:
- a small cutting mat and ruler
- a couple yards of fusible web (hope theres an iron)
- a pressing sheet

my small sketching kit

wireform for shaping vessels

cotton paper, onion skin and film for stencils
All of this fits nicely into my medium sized suitcase with room for clothes! I will buy some paints when I arrive - easier to travel without the risk of them breaking!
I am taking some technology - phone and IPad, plus adapters and a small tripod...plus my family insists on knowing my whereabouts so I have a couple of AirTags....
Do you think I have enough? Anything I've forgotten?
Oooops! I forgot to tell you where I am going: https://eutopiaart.com/
